Music: A Powerful Tool for Learning

This week, Dow Street Community Music School held their annual Beginner Violin Camp. Each morning, students aged 6 – 11 gathered in the Dow Street Recital Hall to take their first steps into violin land. The camp is a comprehensive introductory course, taught by Ms. Aurora Foster (Woodland Middle School/2026 CMA Music Teacher of Excellence). Along with foundational violin technique, students were introduced to instrument care, stage deportment, and basic music reading, music theory, and aural skills. Today, to conclude their camp experience, the students presented a short program for their family and friends of pieces that they learned during the week.

This prompts me to consider what gains our young students made this week beyond new music skills. The positive impact that learning music has on children’s overall development is well documented. Areas such as cognitive development, literacy and mathematical skills, physical coordination, and emotional and social skills are all enhanced by music learning. Children are challenged to remember fine details and to problem solve, they are exposed to new words and rhythms, and must complete tasks involving fine motor skills. Additionally, they must learn the patience needed to practice new skills and pieces and they must work as a team during group musical activities. In short, music positively impacts almost every aspect of a child’s life.

Here is a quote by Dr. Andrea Dawson (MTSU Professor of Violin and Viola/DSCMS Founder) on the benefits of music learning:

“Music brings people together. It enhances our lives at every stage, and improves our health and wellbeing. Children and adults blossom when music is part of our lives. We learn to express emotions in a safe and nurturing environment, confidence and resilience improve, and we learn to work with others. We form connections across space and time to musical traditions near and far. We develop the skills and perseverance needed to thrive in every future endeavor, all while participating in a fun, creative outlet! Music changes lives.”

Congratulations to our intrepid young scholars on their achievements this week! And thank you Ms. Foster and assistant teacher Ms. Brown for an expertly-managed and inspired camp week. 🎶
